A SIMULATION EXPERT
Juri Bryan began his career in FX over 10 years ago and has since worked across 2 continents and held positions as an artist, supervisor, and manager.
He has also played an essential role in ILP’s multiple nominations and awards at the International Emmy Awards for outstanding ‘Special Visual Effects’ in series such as The Mandalorian, Westworld, and Lost In Space. In September 2021 Juri joined ILM London as a Senior FX Technical Director and now serves as Senior Simulation Supervisor at MPC.
COURSE BREAKDOWN
Water FX inside Houdini can be one of the most challenging simulation FX styles to master. In this course, Juri Bryan, a Senior FX Artist, will share his secrets for creating impressive fluid work inside Houdini.
Houdini is the gold-standard for simulating realistic fluids and water. In this advanced course, you will learn the professional techniques used to create water FX at the highest level of VFX.
From foam sculpting to underwater advection, we will leave no stone unturned in this deep dive of the fluid FX pipeline.
Week by week we will build our knowledge of core Water FX concepts as we grow in our understanding of both the artistic and technical aspects of fluid simulations in Houdini. In the final weeks, you will learn from VFX Supervisor Saber Jlassi, who will show you how to create the incredible waterfall scene from the trailer.
WEEK 1 – WORKFLOWS
In this first week of the workshop, we will be taking a look at the basic workflows and tools which Sidefx is providing for us.
WEEK 2 – COMPLEX SIMUATIONS
We will be spending the second week deep diving into some more complex and custom approaches to water simulations.
WEEK 3 – WHITE WATER
In this week we will be taking a close look and a deep dive into white water.
WEEK 4 – BUBBLES + SHARKS
In this week’s videos, we will be taking a look at how to create bubbles that look realistic and the shark scene.
WEEK 5 – BEACHES
This week we will be exploring beach creation inside Houdini.
WEEK 6 – MAELSTROM
This week we will take a closer look at maelstrom simulations and some of the tricks we can apply in order to get these kind of simulations to run a bit faster and with better detail.
WEEK 7 – VARIOUS FX
In week 7, we are going to take a look at a different kind of approach to doing water FX.
WEEK 8 – WATERFALLS PART 1
This week we will start our dive into waterfall simulations.
WEEK 9 – WATERFALLS PART 2
This week we’re going to keep things going with our waterfall scene.
WEEK 10 – RENDERING
In this week, Saber Jlassi will cover the river, waterfall, and shark shot.
